Vientiane would almost seem an anomaly in the Asian context: where all the big cities in this part of the world are inevitably overexcited, noisy, teeming, the discreet Laotian capital stands out with its peaceful character, its slow pace, its almost languid atmosphere. An oasis of calm in an ocean of agitation, this is the image that immediately comes to mind for all travelers.
